  Pilchard \Pil"chard\, n. [Cf. It. pilseir, W. pilcod minnows.]
     (Zool.)
     A small European food fish ({Clupea pilchardus}) resembling
     the herring, but thicker and rounder. It is sometimes taken
     in great numbers on the coast of England.
