  Softa \Sof"ta\, n. [Corruption of Per. s[=o]khtah one who burns,
     is ardent or zealous.]
     Any one attached to a Mohammedan mosque, esp. a student of
     the higher branches of theology in a mosque school. [Written
     also {sophta}.]
