     [Compar. {phonier}; superl. {phoniest}.]
     1. Imitating something superior; intended to deceive;
        fraudulent; having a misleading appearance; not genuine;
        false; counterfeit; fake; as, a phoney diamond; a phoney
        hundred-dollar bill.
