  menhaden \men*ha"den\, n. (Zool.)
     An American marine fish ({Brevoortia tyrannus}) of the
     Herring family ({Clupeidae}), chiefly valuable for its oil
     and as a component of fertilizers; -- called also
     {mossbunker}, {bony fish}, {chebog}, {pogy}, {hardhead},
     {whitefish}, etc.
