  Janizary \Jan"i*za*ry\, n.; pl. {Janizaries}. [F. janissaire,
     fr. Turk. ye[~n]i-tsheri new soldiers or troops.]
     A soldier of a privileged military class, which formed the
     nucleus of the Turkish infantry, but was suppressed in 1826.
