     1. (Bot.) A plant ({Solanum Melongena}), of East Indian
        origin, allied to the tomato, and bearing a large, glossy,
        edible fruit, shaped somewhat like an egg; mad-apple. It
        is widely cultivated for its fruit, commonly eaten as a
        vegetable.
