  Chipmunk \Chip"munk`\, n. [Indian name.] (Zool.)
     A squirrel-like animal of the genus {Tamias}, sometimes
     called the {striped squirrel}, {chipping squirrel}, {ground
     squirrel}, {hackee}. The common species of the United States
     is the {Tamias striatus}. [Written also {chipmonk},
     {chipmuck}, and {chipmuk}.]
