  Achene \A*chene"\, Achenium \A*che"ni*um\n. [Gr. 'a priv. + ? to
     gape.] (Bot.)
     A small, dry, indehiscent fruit, containing a single seed, as
     in the buttercup; -- called a {naked seed} by the earlier
     botanists. [Written also {akene} and {ach[ae]nium}.]
