  Xerophthalmia \Xe`roph*thal"mi*a\, n. [L., fr. Gr. ?; xhro`s dry
     + ? the eye. See {Ophthalmia}.] (Med.)
     An abnormal dryness of the eyeball produced usually by
     long-continued inflammation and subsequent atrophy of the
     conjunctiva.
