  Vitreous \Vit"re*ous\, a. [L. vitreous, from vitrum glass;
     perhaps akin to videre to see (see {Vision}). Cf. {Varnish}.]
     1. Consisting of, or resembling, glass; glassy; as, vitreous
        rocks.
