     balance; cf. Gr. ?.]
     1. A steelyard. [Prov. Eng.]

     2. A form of weighing machine for heavy wares, consisting of


        two horizontal bars crossing each other, beaked at the
        extremities, and supported by a wooden pillar. It is now
