  Sustentation \Sus`ten*ta"tion\, n. [L. sustentatio sustenance,
     maintenance, fr. sustentare to support, maintain, v. intens.
     fr. sustinere to sustain: cf. F. sustentation. See

     1. The act of sustaining, or the state of being sustained;
        preservation from falling; support; sustenance;
