     stif, AS. st[imac]f; akin to D. stijf, G. steif, Dan. stiv,
     Sw. styf, Icel. st[imac]fr, Lith. stipti to be stiff; cf. L.
     stipes a post, trunk of a tree, stipare to press, compress.
