  Solfatara \Sol`fa*ta"ra\, n.[It., from solfo brimstone, sulphur,
     L. sulfur, E. sulphur.] (Geol.)
     A volcanic area or vent which yields only sulphur vapors,
     steam, and the like. It represents the stages of the volcanic
     activity.
