     shiver, splinter, F. ['e]clat, fr. OF. esclater to shiver, to
     chip, F. ['e]clater, fr. OHG. sleizen to tear, slit, split,
     fr. sl[imac]zan to slit, G. schleissen. See {Slit}, v. t.,
     and cf. {Eclat}.]
