  Shadbird \Shad"bird`\ (sh[a^]d"b[~e]rd), n. (Zool.)
     (a) The American, or Wilson's, snipe. See under {Snipe}. So
         called because it appears at the same time as the shad.
     (b) The common European sandpiper. [Prov. Eng.]
