  Scotist \Sco"tist\, n. (Eccl. Hist.)
     A follower of (Joannes) Duns Scotus, the Franciscan
     scholastic (d. 1308), who maintained certain doctrines in
     philosophy and theology, in opposition to the {Thomists}, or
     followers of Thomas Aquinas, the Dominican scholastic.
