  Roussette \Rous*sette"\, n. [F.; -- so called in allusion to the
     color. See {Russet}.]
     1. (Zool.) A fruit bat, especially the large species
        ({Pieropus vulgaris}) inhabiting the islands of the Indian
        ocean. It measures about a yard across the expanded wings.
