  Protocatechuic \Pro`to*cat`e*chu"ic\, a. (Chem.)
     Pertaining to, derived from, or designating, an organic acid
     which is obtained as a white crystalline substance from
     catechin, asafetida, oil of cloves, etc., and by distillation
     itself yields pyrocatechin.
