  Phthalein \Phthal"e*in\, n. [See {Phthalic}.] (Chem.)
     One of a series of artificial organic dyes made as
     condensation products of the phenols with phthalic acid, and
     well represented by phenolphthalein. Their alkaline solutions
     are fluorescent.
