  Perdix \Per"dix\ (p[~e]r"d[i^]ks), prop. n. [L., a partridge,
     Gr. pe`rdix.] (Zool.)
     A genus of birds including the common European partridge.
     Formerly the word was used in a much wider sense to include
     many allied genera.
