  Palea \Pa"le*a\, n.; pl. {Pale[ae]} (-[=e]). [L., chaff.]

        (a) The interior chaff or husk of grasses.
        (b) One of the chaffy scales or bractlets growing on the
            receptacle of many compound flowers, as the Coreopsis,


            the sunflower, etc.
