  Pain \Pain\, v. t. [imp. & p. p. {Pained} (p[=a]nd); p. pr. &
     vb. n. {Paining}.] [OE. peinen, OF. pener, F. peiner to
     fatigue. See {Pain}, n.]
     1. To inflict suffering upon as a penalty; to punish. [Obs.]
