From Bouvier's Law Dictionary, Revised 6th Ed (1856) [bouvier]:

  PANDECTS, civil law. The name of an abridgment or compilation of the civil 
  law, made by order of the emperor Justinian, and to which he gave the force 
  of law. It is also known by the name of Digest. (q.v.)
