     1. (Bot.) An annual plant ({Abelmoschus esculentus} syn.
        {Hibiscus esculentus}), whose green pods, abounding in
        nutritious mucilage, are much used for soups, stews, or
        pickles; gumbo. [Written also {ocra} and {ochra}.]
