  Murex \Mu"rex\, prop. n.; pl. {Murices}. [L., the purple fish.]
     (Zool.)
     A genus of marine gastropods, having rough, and frequently
     spinose, shells, which are often highly colored inside; the
     rock shells. They abound in tropical seas.
