  Matross \Ma*tross"\, n. [D. matroos, fr. F. matelot.] (Mil.)
     Formerly, in the British service, a gunner or a gunner's
     mate; one of the soldiers in a train of artillery, who
     assisted the gunners in loading, firing, and sponging the
     guns. [Obs.]
