  \Mat"e*lotte\ (m[a^]t"[-e]*l[o^]t), n. [F. matelote, fr. matelot
     a sailor; properly, a dish such as a sailors prepare.]
     1. A stew, commonly of fish, flavored with wine, and served
        with a wine sauce containing onions, mushrooms, etc.
