     ma`stigos, a whip + fe`rein to bear.] (Zool.)
     A phylum of protozoans the kingdom Protista, consisting
     mainly of free-living flagellated unicellular organisms,
     lacking photosynthetic capability. Some members are
     pathogenic in man.
