  Illiterate \Il*lit"er*ate\, a. [L. illiteratus: pref. il- not +
     literatus learned. See {In-} not, and {Literal}.]
     Unable to read or write; ignorant of letters or books;
     unlettered; uninstructed; uneducated; as, an illiterate man,
     or people.
