From Bouvier's Law Dictionary, Revised 6th Ed (1856) [bouvier]:

  INDIVISIBLE. That which cannot be separated.
       2. It is important to ascertain when a consideration or a contract, is 
  or is not indivisible. When a consideration is entire and indivisible, and 
  it is against law, the contract is void in toto. 11 Verm. 592; 2 W. & S. 
  235. When the consideration is divisible, and part of it is illegal, the 
  contract is void only pro tanto. 


       3.-To ascertain whether a contract is divisible or indivisible, id to 
  ascertain whether it may or may not be enforced, in part, or paid in part, 
  without the consent of the other party. See 1 Bouv. Inst. n. 694, and
