  Hypoderma \Hyp`o*der"ma\, n. [NL. See {Hypo}, and {derma}.]
     1. (Bot.) A layer of tissue beneath the epidermis in plants,
        and performing the physiological function of strengthening
        the epidermal tissue. In phanerogamous plants it is
        developed as collenchyma.
