  Hypanthium \Hy*pan"thi*um\, n.; pl. L. {Hypanthia}, E.
     {Hypanthiums}. [NL., fr. Gr. "ypo beneath + 'a`nqos flower.]
     (Bot.)
     A fruit consisting in large part of a receptacle, enlarged
     below the calyx, as in the {Calycanthus}, the rose hip, and
     the pear.
