  Hydroxyl \Hy*drox"yl\, n. [Hydro-, 2 + oxygen + -yl.] (Chem.)
     A compound radical, or unsaturated group, {HO}, consisting of
     one atom of hydrogen and one of oxygen. It is a
     characteristic part of the hydrates, the alcohols, the oxygen
     acids, etc.
