  Gaultheria \Gaul*the"ri*a\, n. [NL.] (Bot.)
     A genus of ericaceous shrubs with evergreen foliage, and,
     often, edible berries. It includes the American winter-green
     ({Gaultheria procumbens}), and the larger-fruited {salal} of
     Northwestern America ({Gaultheria Shallon}).
