     cloth, G. fahne banner. See {Vane}, and cf. {Fanion},

     A term applied to various articles, as:
     (a) A peculiar striped scarf worn by the pope at mass, and by
         eastern bishops.
     (b) A maniple. [Written also {fannel}, {phanon}, etc.]
