See {Distrain}.] (Law) A writ commanding the sheriff to distrain a person by his goods or chattels, to compel a compliance with something required of him. [1913 Webster] From Bouvier's Law Dictionary, Revised 6th Ed (1856) [bouvier]: DISTRINGAS, remedies. A writ directed to the sheriff, commanding him to distrain one of his goods and chattels, to enforce his compliance of what is required of him, as for his appearance in a court on such a day, and the like.
