     a. [L. cynicus of the sect of Cynics, fr. Gr. kyniko`s,
     prop., dog-like, fr. ky`wn, kyno`s, dog. See {Hound}.]
     1. Having the qualities of a surly dog; snarling; captious;
        currish.
