  Couvade \Cou`vade"\ (k[=oo]`v[.a]d"), n. [F., fr. couver. See
     {Covey}.]
     A custom, among certain barbarous tribes, that when a woman
     gives birth to a child her husband takes to his bed, as if
     ill.
