From Bouvier's Law Dictionary, Revised 6th Ed (1856) [bouvier]:

  COMPATIBILITY. In speaking of public offices it is meant by this term to 
  convey the idea that two of them may be held by the same person at the same 
  time. It is the opposite of incompatibility. (q.v.)
