  Athanor \Ath"a*nor\, n. [F., fr. Ar. at-tann[=u]r, fr. Heb.
     tann[=u]r an oven or furnace.]
     A digesting furnace, formerly used by alchemists. It was so
     constructed as to maintain uniform and durable heat.
