  Anther \An"ther\, n. [F. anth[`e]re, L. anthera a medicine
     composed of flowers, fr. Gr. ? flowery, fr. 'anqei^n to
     bloom, 'a`nqos flower.] (Bot.)
     That part of the stamen containing the pollen, or fertilizing
     dust, which, when mature, is emitted for the impregnation of
     the ovary. -- {An"ther*al}, a.
