  AEdile \[AE]"dile\, n. [L. aedilis, fr. aedes temple, public
     building. Cf. {Edify}.]
     A magistrate in ancient Rome, who had the superintendence of
     public buildings, highways, shows, etc.; hence, a municipal
     officer.
